“Fuck!” Kennedy tugged at the flower crown, trying to remove it without pulling her hair out in the process. Weddings in general sucked, but weddings she had to participate in were a special uncharted level of hell. “I swear I’m gonna kill Mina,” Kennedy muttered. “This stupid dress and crown, and then she tossed her bouquet at my head. If it weren’t for Slayer reflexes, she could have given me a black eye.”
“That’s bossy big sisters for you,” Dawn said. “She really wants you to be the next one to get married.”
Kennedy snorted, “Only so she can plan another one. There are probably a couple dozen other wedding ideas she wants to try out. At least it was funny watching Kerry and Katherine fight over the bouquet instead.” She tugged at her hair, but only managed to get more tangled in with the crown.
“Here, let me get that,” Dawn said, and gently pulled the crown free. She picked a few errant rose petals from Kennedy’s hair with nimble fingers. Kennedy felt a rush of heat as she thought of other things those fingers could do. She sat down on the bed, patting the space next to her in invitation.
Dawn remained standing, her arms crossed over her chest, “Ok, you owe me now. Why did you need me to talk to Penny Vanderwerff about Scrabble at the reception?”
Kennedy sighed. Dawn’s curiosity was a force unto itself, and nothing was going to happen until it was satisfied. "Because her eyes glaze over at the first mention of the supernatural. She's heard the Council pitch before, and she's super-skeptical about the whole thing. She also hates talking about work, so finance is out. She doesn't get many people who talk to her like she's a person. So it’s refreshing for someone to like you to ask about her days on the competitive Scrabble circuit, and the whole wordplay thing.”
"It’s actually more of a math game. The words don’t matter except as a way of assembling the letters in the right order to maximize your points--"
Kennedy couldn’t help standing up and kissing Dawn for that. “You are completely adorkable, you know that?”
"Yes, yes, I’m irresistible, and you totally want me," Dawn said. "But how does that conversation lead to her donating to the Council?"
"It doesn’t," Kennedy answered. "The whole point of it was to for the two of you to have a long super-engaged conversation in full view of Marco Vargas. He's been waffling on donating to the Council, but if now that he’s seen Vanderwerff talking seriously to a high-ranking Council member, he'll jump in just to make sure he beats her to it."
Dawn’s brow furrowed. “How did you get so good at this kind of devious fundraising intrigue?”
“Dad made his fortune doing financial planning for the super-wealthy. If I didn’t get called, he was gonna bring me into the family business. I picked up a few things here and there. Like the wealthier people are, the more likely they are to act like four-year-olds. Compared to billionaires, I’m polite and unassuming.” Kennedy sat back down on the bed, and tilted her head in another invitation.
Dawn accepted the invitation this time and joined her on the bed. “Ok, so one more thing. Why were you freaking out when you couldn’t find your orange thong today? Is there some sort of lucky Slayer underwear mojo going on?”
“Nah. It’s because my ass looks really hot in them, and I wanted to look forward to you taking them off me after all the wedding bullshit.”
Dawn laughed, and then with a mischievous gleam in her eye, asked, “So you wanna play Naughty Heiress and Stern Financial Advisor?”
Kennedy grinned. “Only if we both get a turn as the Naughty Heiress.” And it hit her in a moment of a blinding clarity, that she wanted to marry Dawn.
Now wasn’t the right time to ask. But she promised herself she’d do it soon.
It wouldn’t matter if they eloped in Las Vegas, or even did another big annoying shindig with all the family and the white dresses and all of that crap, if that was what Dawn wanted.
Because there was no one like her Dawn, and Kennedy would endure one hundred weddings, if it meant coming home to Dawn forever.
